CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Frank recognised Davidâs number as he answered his phone.
âDadâs been called in for questioning.â
âWhat? Why didnât he tell me?â asked Frank, taken aback.
Heâd drummed into Carl for years that any contact from the police was to be notified to him, without fail. Hitherto, his client had always done that scrupulously. It was a rule which had served them both well.
âDisrespect, he says. Apparently, you swore at him.â
âI did, and he bloody well deserved it,â replied Frank. âSilly bugger. He hasnât gone alone, has he?â
âNo â heâs taking Jim Steiner, who got a lot of pleasure out of calling to tell me this morning. The meetingâs in a couple of daysâ time.â
Frank swore. Jim Steiner had done some legal work for him in the early days, and he was definitely a competent lawyer, but he was also manifestly ambitious. Heâd clearly had his eye on Frankâs position as what the Mafia would have called âconsigliereâ to Carl. Too clearly.
So, Frank had got rid of him a couple of years ago â just like that. When Carl learnt of it, he had jested clumsily about anti-semitism, but Frank had responded seriously.
âThe reason I donât like Jim is not because he is Jewish but because he is a nasty, untrustworthy little worm,â heâd said.
Carl had accepted the reproach at the time without comment. Heâd just nodded.
But clearly, he hadnât forgotten the man or his competence. Maybe he was just teaching Frank a lesson. Or perhaps this was a permanent shift to Steiner. Frank cursed.
âThis is getting beyond a joke,â he said. âIâll call him.â
âGood luck with that,â replied David. Then he revealed Carlâs visit to the flat.
âWhat does your mum say about that?â asked Frank.
David was caught momentarily off balance; he hadnât revealed that Cynthia was staying with him. But the question didnât infer that Frank was actually aware of that, he decided.
âDidnât think she knew such language,â he replied with a chuckle. âHopping mad. Sheâs had it with him.â
There was a pause on the line before Frank responded.
âI reckon that makes three of us then.â

That evening, Cynthia cooked Davidâs favourite meal â it was in the oven when he got back from the office. She knew he could smell it from the look on his face, which heâd had since childhood when steak and kidney pie was in the offing, though he tried hard to conceal it.
âYou called him, yeah?â he asked his mother anxiously, as she emerged from the kitchen and offered him a glass of red. She already had one herself.
âNo,â Cynthia said forcefully. âMost certainly I did not.â
âMumâ¦â began David in the small boy, whiny voice heâd never quite got out of when pleading with her.
âI texted to tell him Iâd got the message,â said Cynthia. âSo, youâre in the clear.â
She took a sip of her wine, awaiting his reply.
âAnd thatâs all?â said David.
âThatâs all,â replied Cynthia.
David gestured helplessly. âOK.â
Once her son was busily guzzling down the meal, Cynthia got to the point. Sheâd been thinking about it all day.
